Excepts from Saving Tristan
Chapter One

Why Herbs

Modern medicine undoubtedly saved my son's life when the blockage responsible for his severe kidney damage was surgically removed at two years old. While I have tremendous respect and gratitude for the advances being made in modern main stream medicine, I cannot ignore the benefits and advantages of nature's gifts or my concern for some aspects of what is normal in modern medicine.

Drug related deaths outnumber dietary and herbal supplement related deaths an estimated eight thousand to one. How can 32,000 people die yearly in the United States alone from an adverse reaction to prescription drugs, their preventable tragic passing going largely unreported? Could it be because of how common it has become to die a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved drug related death? Death by herbs is rare, making a highly unusual story to report on the evening news or daily paper and tends to stick in the viewers mind creating the illusion that prescription drugs are safer. My instinctive response when asked, "But aren't herbs dangerous," is relative to what? If we are talking relative to prescription and even over the counter drugs, then statistically herbs are clearly the safer option.

Statistics aside, let's look at the Creators wisdom in just one of nature's offerings. Lobelia is a fascinating plant valued for its definite antispasmodic, diuretic and expectorant actions. In Western herbology it is highly recommended as a balancing herb and used in many herbal combinations. While classified by some scientists as potentially harmful, and its sale banned in Europe, lobelia has a natural built in overdose protection. A punishing round of vomiting awaits those lacking in respect and common sense in its use. Common sense and the love and care for our families will lead to careful, informed decisions in selecting herbal remedies for ourselves and our children. What may be perfect for an adult could harm a child, especially under the age of two.

Herbal remedies are beautiful in that, unlike drugs, they rarely have side effects. Insomnia is a problem for hundreds of thousands and drug companies cash in on the need for sleep to the tune of $1.3 billion annually, just on the two most popular drugs alone. If you have ever used an over the counter or prescription drug to help you sleep, you no doubt are familiar with the next day grogginess, depression, headaches and perhaps even the frightening possible serious side effects listed on the printout from your pharmacist. Herbs such as valerian root, hops flowers, scullcap and passionflower can help you fall asleep and stay asleep without any side effects, especially when taken in a liquid combination.

Side effects from the adult blood pressure medication my son needed to lower his out of control blood pressure were very motivating as I studied and researched for a better option. After two weeks of applying what I learned, his blood pressure was normal and has been within the normal range ever since. The herbs I selected, along with Coenzyme Q10, are doing more for him than the drug had been able to. He no longer needed help walking, and the dizziness and nausea due to the drug's side effects vanished, allowing him to enjoy life as all little boys should.

Dollars spent over the past twelve years to give Tristan a normal life thru natural means has been a mere fraction of the cost for eight years of dialysis followed by a risky transplant. Healthcare represents a sixth of our nation's economy with costs continuing to rise. The fierce battle in Washington along with the outcry from the people is evidence of how important, and even emotional, this issue is to all of us. Arguments are centered on money, extending coverage to those who cannot afford healthcare and where the funds come from to pay for the new programs.

To those who are sickened by the whole mess and believe in taking personal responsibility for their own health, natural healing presents an amazing alternative. Many herbal remedies and dietary supplements have been scientifically proven to improve health and help prevent diseases requiring high dollar treatment. The information is out there, and if this book is the beginning of your own quest for the answers you or your loved ones need, congratulations! I hope you will continue and find the solution regardless of any disadvantages you face. As a young mom I found desperately needed solutions without the benefit of education beyond high school.

Courage and determination along with prayer and faith was enough.
